In addition you must be certified at at least the first level of Auto Mechanic certifications, and ideally, the second level as well, if not the third.

To be a legally operating auto mechanic in the state of california, there are a series of licenses that you must obtain, that can be broken down in to two main levels:

1. The first level requires the basic auto repair maintenance license issued by the state of California.

2. The second level requires, at a minimum the installer/adjuster motor vehicle pollution control license.

Both levels require a class A drivers license.

It is also advisable to have on staff a mechanic with the basic license and full experience overhauling computer systems.

3. A federal tax id number also is required in most state for those that they get a seller's permit, and if you are a partnership or you want to use it instead of you social security number to open a bank account.

A mechanics license is required for legal protection. Unless your mechanics are licensed, any mistake you make is amplifyed by the fact that you are operating an unlicensed shop. It is also illegal to advertise your services as a mechanic if you are not a licensed mechanic.

It is advantageous to form a corporation for your business for both legal, financial, and tax protection. The structures allowed by a corporation allow for more protection than any other.
